Consider this passage from Brians Hunts
The inuit would put a small piece of feather over the hole and stand with bone harpoon ready and when the seal came into the hole the air pushing ahead of its body would ruffle the feather and the hunter would lunge with the harpoon and bury the barbed head in the back of the seal.
Why do three different verb forms in this passage occurs with "would"? what does the use of would convey here?

The first "would" refers to the past because it occurs before the seal coming into hole .THe second "would" refer to the present because after the seal coming to the hole it occur and the third "would" refer to the future because the hunter will be able to lunge with the harpoon and bury the barbed head.

You need to correct some gramatical errors: The first "would" refers to the past because it occurs before the seal was coming into hole .The second "would" refers to the present because after the seal was coming into the hole it occurs and the third "would" refers to the future because the hunter will be able to lunge with the harpoon and bury the barbed head.
The use of "would" conveys here because it holds the sequense of facts that happens in this pasage.
Nevertheless, your answer seems to be true, I believe that the three verb forms in this passage occur with “would” because the author is an indirect speech which in this sentence reports what Inuits do to hunt a seal.
In the three posts for Assignment #10 on this blog, the title of the book is spelled correctly only once. Which spelling is correct? What do you need to do about the other two?
